Path: Aquaculture /Net Pens /

One step further on from traditional, regionally restricted pond farming involves fish production in so-called net pens. Such a net pen represents a fish farm in open waters. Comprising a buoyant carrier system and a pen for keeping the fish, the pens can also be equipped with an automatic feed system.
These net pens are also familiar from their use on salmon farms in Norwegian waters. The partially negative impact that net pens have on the natural ecological system are well-known and have been discussed at length. No matter how close to nature this cultivation method may appear at first glance, much less can be said about this being a form of species-compatible farming.
Breeding fish in modern recirculation systems is much more durable and less harmful.
